Brave Rail Staff Member Suffers Severe Wounds During Multiple Knife Incident on Express Service

A brave railway employee who intervened to protect travelers during a multiple stabbing incident on a express train has sustained life-threatening wounds, police confirmed on Sunday.

Details of the Terrifying Event

CCTV video reportedly depicts the staff member attempting to halt the attacker as the train traveled between Peterborough and another station in the county. Witnesses described a terrifying 14-minute duration after the train left Peterborough, with injured victims running through compartments.

The suspect, a 32-year-old citizen from Peterborough, is in custody for questioning. Authorities declared a significant incident on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in downtown London.

Crisis Reaction and Consequences

The event on the weekend led to 11 people being treated in medical facilities after the train made an unplanned stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Five people have since been released from medical care.

A bystander recorded the individual brandishing a big knife and being shot with a stun device as he faced police on the platform. He was allegedly heard shouting, "Kill me, kill me."

“This was a horrific attack that has had a wide impact. Our sympathies go out to the injured and their loved ones – particularly the courageous member of train personnel whose relatives are being assisted by trained officers,” said a high-ranking police officer.

Labor Reaction and Appeals for Measures

Rail associations were swift to praise employees and call for more measures. One union official stated he would be “seeking urgent discussions with government, train companies and police to ensure that we have the best possible assistance, resources and effective protocols in operation”.

A different union representative encouraged the rail company and authorities “to act swiftly to review security, to support the affected employees, and to ensure nothing like this occurs again”.

Driver Commended for Quick Action

The operator who stopped the service at Huntingdon was reported as being “deeply affected” but “well”, and has been commended by association representatives for doing “exactly the right thing”.

“The driver did not stop the service in the center of two stops where it’s obviously challenging for the emergency services to access, but he carried on traveling until he got to Huntingdon, where the response was pretty much already there,” stated a union official.

Further Details

Authorities said they got the first distress calls at 7:39 pm, and the service was compelled to make an unplanned stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.

One observer recounted initially thinking if the event was a Halloween prank, but soon understood from people's expressions that it was real.

Police have stated there is nothing to suggest the event was a terror-related attack and have requested the community to provide with any additional details.

Train operations on the impacted line are expected to have delays until the following day, with passengers recommended to defer their travel where feasible.
