Ex- Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James the ex-FBI chief has denied the charges to making false statements to US legislators and hindering a legislative process.

His attorney submitted the response on his behalf in a federal court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday morning.

Patrick Fitzgerald declared he would seek to have the case dismissed for various factors including that his client, a critic of President Donald Trump, was being targeted.

James Comey was charged shortly after Donald Trump urged his top legal official to proceed against him.

Legal Proceedings

In court on Wednesday, Comey's lawyer Mr Fitzgerald told the magistrate they aimed to present multiple motions to terminate the legal matter before a legal hearing, claiming the prosecution was vindictive and that a federal prosecutor was unlawfully assigned to handle the case.

The former director's legal matter was originally managed by a Virginia prosecutor, who left his position under scrutiny from Donald Trump after his examination into an additional political adversary - the New York official - was unable to initiate prosecution.

Legal Setting

James Comey seemed in good spirits as he entered the court on mid-week, conversing with his legal team and making jokes. He was supported by his partner, Patrice Failor and offspring his daughter, a federal prosecutor who the former government dismissed.

Following the reading to the judge recite his rights and the dual charges against him in legal proceedings on Wednesday, the defendant was asked if he comprehended the allegations.

"Yes your honour. Thank you very much," he informed the proceedings.

Background Context

James Comey was the FBI Director from 2013 to 2017 and was terminated about several months into Trump's initial presidency as national leader. At the moment, Mr Comey was directing an investigation into Russian election interference and whether there were any relationships between Moscow and Trump's campaign.

While in office, Mr Comey sparked a counter-response from the Democratic party when he announced just immediately preceding the national vote that he was probing political contender Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Indictments against the candidate were never brought, resulting in disapproval from conservative politicians as well.

Current Allegations

Prosecutors allege Mr Comey provided false information to Congress during a legislative proceeding in recent years when he was being examined about both the email probe as well as the Russia election probe. They say he provided false information to the legislative body by claiming he had not permitted a person at the FBI to release to journalistic entities data about the FBI investigations.

Government lawyers also accuse the defendant of "improperly attempting to sway, block and delay" the legislative group by making false statements to it.

Public Statements

In a video Mr Comey published to his online platform after he was accused, he declared he was wrongly accused and alleged the former president of conducting himself like a "dictator".

"Our household have been aware for a long time that there are ramifications to challenging Mr Trump," he said. "We choose not to live on our bended knee."
"I have done nothing wrong," he stated further. "So let's have a legal proceeding."

These allegations against James Comey came after the former president shared on online platforms calling for his top legal official, Ms Bondi, take legal action against James Comey and additional individuals.
