The Tooth Fairy Story Review: Cartoon Adventure with a Touch of Kid-Appropriate Preteen Love Story

Throughout this cartoon journey aimed at tweens, the world of fairies focuses on gathering teeth from slumbering children and placing gold beneath where they sleep. Board-riding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about devoting his life to collecting baby teeth—a feeling that’s completely understandable. He is just slightly more curious about the financial workings behind it all: the fairies deliver the teeth to mysterious goblins, who supply gold as payment. But Van’s curiosity is piqued when he spots a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who proves to be far from the hideous creature he expected.

An Unlikely Bond and Shared Threat

The stage is set for an exciting quest with a gentle touch of teen romance (even though it remains very much suitable for children). The fairy and goblin communities are separated from each other, and nothing fuels the thrill of the forbidden to bring people as one. The two species portrayed in the film are remarkably alike, yet each holds prejudiced beliefs about the opposite side. The fairies are said to be entitled sorts, prone to stealing whatever they fancy, while the goblins are reportedly stupid, smelly, and backward, but are actually bright and technologically advanced.

Naturally, this scenario requires a shared foe to unite against, and this is duly provided in the form of some nasty spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret with these guys: they aim to devour the fairies and goblins, and they make for quite savage, if not especially competent, villains.

Ideal Viewers and Final Thoughts

You won’t find all that many animated films aimed at the kind of audience that is beginning to have first crushes, but aren’t yet old enough for whatever 14-year-olds view these days instead of popular teen sagas. If your child falls into this age group, it probably won’t to become their new favorite movie, but you could do worse.

A Tooth Fairy Tale releases in movie theaters in Scotland starting October 10 and the rest of the UK beginning October 24.
